BUTTERWAIN: John de Boterwange was one of the Scots prisoners of war taken in Dunbar Castle in 1296 (Bain, II, 742). In the following year as John Buterwan, he was one of many belonging to the district of Atholl pledged to serve the king of England beyond the seas (ibid., II, 942). James Buttirwambe was bailie of the burgh of Banff in 1323 (RAA., I, p. 223), and fifty years later William Butirwaine was collector of contributions in the sheriffdom of Perth 'super Ileff' (ER., II, p. 423).
