Biglands have not lived in Bigland Hall since the 1970s, but the coat of arms, inscribed on this and another nearby estate, is a lion rampant holding a stalk of barley, the norse origin seems to have been passed down the generations since at least the use of a coat of arms circa 1600, if not earlier.

Anglicised to Bigland, though probably nothing to do with Bignall in Staffs. Modern Norwegian has dropped a "g", hence Bygland in Norway.
