An Etymological Dictionary of Family and Christian Names (1857) by William Arthur

From Binge-Gerault, Normandy, mentioned in a charter of King John to Henry de Ferrers (Mémoires de la Society des Antiquaires de la Normandie, v. 129). In 1191 Robert de Binga witnessed a charter of Henry, Bishop of Bayeux, executed at Rouen. In 1274 Reginald Binge was of Oxfordshire, Robert B. of Devon (RH. i. 695, ii. 76). In 1340 Thomas Bynge was a juror in Kent (Non. Inq. 399). Reginald Binge was one of the gentry of Essex 1433 (Fuller's Worthies of England); and c. 1550 the family of Byng was possessed of Wrotham, Kent. From this Norman family descended the Viscounts Torrington, and the celebrated Sir John Byng, General in the Peninsular War, and Earl of Strafford.

The Norman People (1874)

The Bings held property in Wrotham in the time of Elizabeth, and one of this family was sheriff of Kent in the same reign. In the time of James I. the Bings also owned property in Tunbridge, where the name still remains; and in this reign George Bing was mayor of Dover, and also the representative of the city in Parliament. There are several memorials of Bings in the church of St. John, Margate, erected in the latter half of last century; and in 1782 Mr. H. Bing owned Yokes Court, in Frinsted (H.).
