In Korean, Byon (also Byoun, Byeon, Pyun, Pyŏn, Pyon) is Romanized from 변, which is one of the most common surnames in Korea. There are two Chinese characters for this surname, 卞 and 邊, is derived from Bian, a Chinese surname. These are born by two different groups of families. The larger of the two groups (卞) is composed of two closely related clans. The surname is about 2,600 years old. This variant of the surname Bian originated in an area referred to which during the Jin Dynasty (晉朝 265AD to 420AD) as Jiyang prefecture (濟陽郡). The present day location of Jiyang prefecture is in the northwest of Dingtao county (西北定陶縣, 115.5 degree East and 35.1 degree North) of Shandong province.
Ji Fa (姬發), after he had established the Zhou Dynasty (1134BC To 256BC) gave power to his 13th brother named Ji Zhenduo (姬振鐸) to rule a district called Cao (曹present day Cao county 曹縣 in Shandong province 山東省) which was renamed the State of Cao (曹國).In 683BC, Jiang Zhuer (姜諸兒) the 15th ruler of the State of Qi (齊國 present day Linzi county 臨淄縣 in Shandong province) dispatched a large army to attack the State of Lu (魯國 present day Qufu county 曲阜縣 in Shandong province). Ji Tong (姬同), the 16th ruler of Lu, appointed a descendant of Ji Zhenduo named Ji Gui (姬劌) as his military strategist. Ji Tong and Ji Gui went to battle together. By giving advice to Ji Tong who commanded the army of Lu, the Qi troops were defeated by the Lu forces. Ji Tong not only rewarded Ji Gui by appointing him an official but also assigned him to administer a place called Bian (卞 in the regions of 袞州and 泗水) in Shandong province. Ji Gui was known as Bian Gui and his offspring adopted BIAN (卞) as their surname. The surname Bian evolved from surname Ji, And the clan began to spread from Jiyang.The other family group for Bian (邊) is said by some sources to be composed of 67 clans, but only three of them can be documented with certainty, and 90% of this second group are members of one of those three clans.
