Caballería Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

This surname comes from France. During the Spanish Reconquest, some knights from the neighboring country crossed the border to join the Catalans and Aragonese who fought against the Moors. It seems that, at first, the name was Cabanilles and so it appears in old documents of the Principality of Catalonia. Then, with the passage of time and as it spread throughout Spain, it slightly changed, becoming in some cases Cabanillas, since the original Cabanilles has not disappeared either. There is news of a knight born in Catalonia called Pedro de Cabanilles who descended precisely from the French to which we have referred.
