John Cabell was witness in Brechin, 1464 (REB., II, 103), and Alexander Cabel or Cabell, witness in Aberdeen, 1493—1497 (REA., I, p. 333,338), may be Alexander Cabell, parson of Banchory-Devenick in 1499 and 1508 (SCM., II, p. 261; REA., I, p. 352). Matilda Cabell occupied land in Brechin, 1508 (REB., II, 160), and George Cabell was convicted in 1527 for importing "ffalse and fforged pennies into the Kingdom" (Trials, I, p. 137). William Cable was admitted burgess of Dundee, 1561 (Wedd., p. 164).
The French Cabel (and later Cabeau), prob. of Celtic orig., with the French diminutive suff. -el, Latin -ell-us.
