A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

This is familiar by reason of the fame of William Cadogan (1675-1726), first Earl Cadogan, who was closely associated with Marlborough in his military campaigns. He was born in Dublin, but was of a Welsh family of whom Prince Cadwugaun (d. 1112) was the most notable. Several of these held official positions in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the correspondence and activites of Major William Cadogan, who was governor of Trim from 1647 to 1661, occupy more space in the later Ormond Manuscripts than almost any other individual other than one of the Butler family.

The name is still extant in fair numbers, but seldom met outside Co. Cork (apart of course from migrants from Co. Cork). These families are of quite different origin, being native Irish, Ó Ceadagáin by name. It was first anglicized O'Kadegane and O'Keadagan as is known from the Elizabethan Fiants and was found then as now in the O'Sullivan country.

The Gormanston Register records that Thomas and Bartholomew Cadigan were considerable landholders in Co. Limerick in 1341, their place being called Martyncadyganestown. These were probably of the O'Cadigan sept. The Patent Rolls also record several people of the name in Co. Limerick between 1345 and 1360.
