1642. Buried — Jane Cadger, servant of Henry Coxe: St. Mary Aldermary (London).
From the occupation of 'cadger,' one who carries burdens, a porter, a hawker. Michael Cagger was one of an assize in Dunfermline in 1493 (DBR., 45), and alms were given to the relict of Simon Cagear in Dunkeld in 1511 (Rent. Dunk., p. 114). In 1558 the caggers of Dunkeld furnished candles to the bishop (ibid., p. 360). A serious assault was committed on the widow of John Kaidger In 1612 (RSCA., II, p. 182), and in the same year a burgess of Perth was "decemit in the vrang bluid latting of Thomas Clerk, cagger, in Elgin, in stricking of him with ane greit irone key in the heid" (Rec. Inv., II, p. 98).
