The name appears in Nisbet (by metethesis) as Crynecross. From the lands of the same name in the old barony of Glenesk in Angus. In old charters the name was sometimes Latinized 'Carnea Crux.' Sometime before 1325 Duncan de Caryncros appears as witness in a charter by Henry de Maule, lord of Panmure (Panmtire, II, 159), and Henri of Carnecors was a charter witness in 1388 (Bamff, p. 22). John de Carincors who served on an inquisition made at Forfar in 1438 (RAA., II, p. 545) may be the John de Karyncorss who was one of an inquest made at Brechin in 1450 (REB., II, 79) Thomas Carncors was a burgess of Dundee in 1459 (RAA., II, 129), Nichol Carncorse was a bailie of Edinburgh in 1518 and dean of guild in 1530 (EBR., 174; MCM., II, p. 107). William Carnecors of Colmislie had a grant of the lands of Eister Rarechye in the earldom of Ross in 1550 (RMS., IV, 446), Robert Karnecors was a witness in Ferne in 1545 (Laing, 495), and in 1571 sentence of forfeiture was passed against Robert Cairncorse of Clumislie Diur. Occ., p. 244), probably a son of the forementioned William Carnecors, A 'dour' was 'bocht from Jeillis Cairncorss' in Urie in 1614 (Urie, p. 14), and James Carniecroce was bailie of Sanquhar before 1687 (Dumfries). This surname is said now to be represented in Cairns and Cross, which have I,een adopted in its place (Aberdeen Journal Notes and queries, II, p. 55), Cairncrose 1658, Cairnecroice and Cairnecroce 1662, Carnecroce 1633, Carnross 1595, Kernecrose 1597.
