From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is not derived from the northern county of the name but is a corruption of Kettins, the name of an old barony in Angus. A canonry in the church of Brechin was conferred on Robert de Kethenis in 1345 (REB., II, 391), and in 1347 Ingrain de Ketenis was granted a canonry of Aberdeen. Master Simon of Catnes, clerk, had a safe conduct into England, 1377 (Buin, IV, 253), and as Symon de Ketnes (Ketness or Ketenes), canon of Aberdeen, was witness to a number of charters relating to the church of Aberdeen between 1376—86 (REA., I, p. 109,142, 175). "Ingeram of Ketenis archdein of Dunkeld, sone and air of umquhill Johnne of Ketenis, granted his lands within the town of Kethynnis to our Lady Kirk of Dundee in 1391 (PSAS., XLV, p. 247). John Catnes was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1454 and Richard Catnes in 1475 (NSCM., I, p. 14, 25), and John Katness was a laic of Brechin in 1483 (REB., II, 117). Alison Caittins appears in Rottinraw of Panbiyde, 1626 (Brechin), James Cathnes was 'post' in Aberdeen, 1650 (SCM., V, p. 174), Isobel Caithens appears in Montrose, 1668, John Caithness, burgess of Montrose, 1669, and David Cathnes in Corttertoun of Pitforthie, 1690 (Brechin). Mr. James Caithnes, writer in Tolbooth Kirk parish, Edinburgh, 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. X, p. 458), and seven persons of the name are recorded in Edinburgh from 1640 (Edinb. Marr.). Caitnes 1647. (2) Robert of Catenesse, Catnesse, or Catnes, servant (vallettus) of the earl of Sutherland, who had a safe conduct to return to Scotland in 1362 (Rot. Scot., I, p. 858,874) may have derived his name from that of the county.
