From the old lands or barony of Callander in Perthshire. Alwyn de Calyntyr witnessed a grant by Maldoueny, earl of Lennox to Stephen de Blantyr c. 1248 (Levenax, p. 36). The forename would suggest that the Calyntyrs were a branch of the family of the earls of Levenax. Richard Callender was constable of Stirling Castle in 1282. A later Alewyn de Calantir (Kalentyn) of the county of Stirling, and Sir John de Calentyr, knight, his father rendered homage in 1296 (Barn, II, p. 190,211). From an inquisition of 1303—4 (Bain, 11, 1457) Alewyn is shown to be the son and nearest 'haire' of Sir John, being twenty-eight years old in that year. John of Calenter witnessed Elphinston charters of c. 1340—41 (Elphinstone, I, p. 6; II, p. 221). John de Callenter was one of the burgesses of Stirling who attacked the cruives and fishings of the abbot and convent of Cambuskenneth, c. 1366 (Cambus., 55). George Kallender was admitted burgess of Glasgow in 1631 (Burgesses). In Scotland this name is undoubtedly of territorial origin and not derived from the occupation of calendering or glossing cloth French calendrier). Callenter 1536.
(Celtic) belonging to Callander (Perthshire, &c.), 13th cent. (Falkirk) Calentyr, of obscure meaning. Sir Herbert Maxwell (Scottish Land-Names, p. 13) says: ‘The utmost that can be done with Callander is to identify it doubtfully with Calithros, Latinized Calatria, where, in 638, Donald Brec, King of Dalriada, was defeated by the Britons; and any suggestion as to its meaning must at present be pure conjecture.’ (Anglo-Fn-Latin) Calendrer [from French calandre a calender; Latin cylindr-us]
A kind of lark was so called; but a likelier derivation is from calenderer, a presser of cloth-a trade still existing.
Local: from the village of Callender in Perthshire.
