The Sire de Cambrai was at the battle of Hastings (Wace, ii. 267); Godefridus de Chambrai held lands in capite, Leicestershire, 1086; Henry de C. one fee in Derby, 1165 (Liber Niger); Ralph de C. paid scutage in Sussex and Hunts, 1199 and 1203. The name was corrupted to Chambreys or Chambreis.
