Camoys Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

CAMOYS: Walter Camoys, clerk of Robert, bishop of Glasgow is probably the Wautier Cammays, clerk, of Roxburghshire, who rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 238,208). Richard Cambays of Roxburghshire also rendered homage in the same year (ibid., p. 209). Sir Ralph de Camoys of Great Stukeley was one of the adherents of Simon de Montfort in the baron's war (Moore, Lands, p. 110). "Camoys, not known anything of before the reign of Kinc John; an interpolation in Roll of Battle Abbey" (Baring-Gould, p. 214).

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

CAMOYS: The fair daughter of Chaucer's Miller of Trompington is described as having a "camoys nose," by which it appears we are to understand an organ of the "snub" or retroussi species. Halliwell says, "Camoise, crooked, flat, (Anglo-Norman) Also spelt camuse. The word is generally applied to a nose." But the baronial family used the territorial "De," as early as temp. Henry III., and they were most probably surnamed from some locality in Normandy.
