CAMPANIA: De Campania is the Latin form of Champagne, which see. The name is apparently now extinct or disguised beyond recognition. Radulph de Campania witnessed a charter in favor of the Hospital of Soltre between 1214 and 1240 (Soltre, p. 18). About 1219 Robert de Campania witnessed a charter by John, earl of Huntingdon, in favor of the Abbey of Arnbroath (RAA., I, 84), and about the same date he witnessed another charter by Earl John to Norman filius Malcolm de Lesslyn (CAB., p. 548). Sir Rauf de Campania in 1263 granted the church of Warg (= Borgue) to the canons of Dryburgh (Dryburgh, p. 22). Robert de Campania, son and heir of Nicholas de Campania, remitted and quit claimed to Dervorgilla of Galloway all his lands in Borg held of her in capite in 1282 (Bain, II, 212—214). Ralf de Campania served on an inquest made at Berwick in 1296 on lands in Dumfries and also rendered homage in the same year (Bain, II, 730,824). For later entries see under Champagne.
