Candeias Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Candeias, literally meaning "oil lamps", refers most commonly to Nossa Senhora das Candeias, one of the several Portuguese versions of the Marian title "Our Lady of the Candles." It was customary in the Portuguese-speaking world to baptise poor babies in small villages with the first name only, adding an identifier or two when needed to avoid confusion, usually when the father wasn't known or could not be named. Sometimes, this identifier came from the saint celebrated in the day of their birth, and thus those born on February 2nd might end up with the surname Candeias. That Marian title is also associated with the town of Candeias, in Bahia, Brazil, which may be the toponymical origin of the surname in some families. However, that's unlikely, given the fact that the municipality of Candeias was created as late as 1958.
