Probably from It. O'Condin, descendant of Canan (diminutive of Cano, a wolf-cub). This surname is found in Kirkcudbrightshire and in part of Dumfriesshire. Fergus Acannane had sasine of lands in the parish of Balmakclellane, 1562 (ER., XIX p. 499); and John Acannane was retoured heir in lands II the same parish, 1574 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 33). James Acannane of Killochie and James Acannane in Dumfriesshire were charged with tumult in church, 1607 (RPC., XIV p. 520); and Gilbert Achannane of Murdoch at was one of a number charged with abiding from the raid of the Isle, 1611 (Trials, III. p. 118). David Cannane was retoured heir in lands of Slawigdau alias vocatis the Fell, 1624; and James Cannane was recorded heir of James Cannan of Killochie, 1643 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 160,223). John Cannan of Guffockland, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 570). George Cannon (b. c. 1805 at Kiniemuir), general in the Turkish service, was mainly instrumental in producing the Russian discomfiture at Gingevo in 1854.
