Canning Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
The famous George Canning is sometimes thought to have been of an ancient Irish family of Co.
Derry: his father, George Canning (1733-1771), a poet, was of that county, and for a century before his time the Cannings of Garvagh, Co. Derry, had been landowners of standing, but in fact they came from Wiltshire, England; while another George Canning, who was very active in organizing the Plantation of Ulster in 1615,was from Warwickshire. These were thus not connected with any of the Gaelic families whose names have at some time been anglicized as Canning. One of these is O Cainin of Westmeath and Offaly, called O'Cannine and O'Cannyn in the sixteenth century Fiants. It is recorded in official birth registrations as having been used synonymously with Cannon (see Irish Families p. 73) in Donegal, Leitrim and Mayo, and with Cunnane in Mayo. Canning is now quite at numerous name in Ireland, being found chiefly in west Ulster and north Connacht.
*For the significance of this word as a legal term in the Tudor period see More Irish Families p. 283.
(Celtic) a corruption form of Cannan or Cannon, q.v. (English) Cana’s Son [Old English son suff. -ing]
The two best known families of this name came to Ulsater from England in the seventeenth century; but some Cannings are Ó Cainín of Westmeath and Offaly. Canning is also an occasional synonym of Cannon. SIF 28
(English) One who came from Cannings (Cana’s people), in Wiltshire; a corruption of Cannon, q.v.
(English, Irish) A clergyman on the staff of a cathedral or important church; a member of a Canon's entourage; descendant of the wolf cub.
Probably from Cannings, co. Wilts, (Bishop's Cannings). The two viscounts, Canning and Stratford de Bedcliffe, are descended from W. Cannynges, the pious founder of St. Mary Bedcliffe, Bristol, in the XV. cent.
(Saxon.) Cyning, a leader, a king. German, Konig; Dutch, Koning; Danish, Konge; Swedish, Konung; Welsh, cun; Irish, cean, which is the same as the Gaelic Ceann, and the oriental Khan or Kaun, all signifying head, a leader. Saxon Connan and Cunnan, to see, to know; hence Gunning, or Canning, Kenning.
The Cannings bear the name of an Anglo - Saxon clan that originally had its home in Wilts and Somerset (K.). The name of Canning is still fairly represented in and near the original home of the clan in Hants and Wilts. The Warwickshire Cannings held property in Foxcote from the time of Henry VI. down to recent times (D.).
