William Cant and Sithow Cant were tenants under the Douglases in Telny in the barony of Aberdoure, Fife, 1376 (RHM., I, p. lxiv). A writer in the Scottish antiquary (IV) says that the name occurs in the Exchequer Rolls in the fifteenth century, and that the family, by trade dealers in cloth, supplied the king s household. They were evidently, he says, Flemings, and are mentioned in connection with Flanders. They obtained land at Masterton near Dunfermline, which their descendants of the name still possess. A family of the name early attained prominence in Edinburgh, where the name was common in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Adam Cant was bailie there, 1403 (EBR., 2), and James Cant was chosen dean of guild, 1413 (CDE., 21). Alexander Cant was provost of Montrose, 1430 (REB., II, 33), and Patrick Kant or Cant and Thomas Cant, Scottish merchants, had safe conducts into England, 1426—50—75 (Bain, IV, 990, 1230, 1433). Alan Cant was rector of the Hospital of Soltre and chancellor of St. Andrews, 1461 (Sollre, p. 58). Henry Cant represented Edinburgh in the Scottish Parliament from 1473 to 1493 (Sc. Ant., VII, p. 79). A family of this name were tenants on lands of the Abbey of Cupar-Angus (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 147,167). Lands were leased to Richard Cante in 1485, and two years later Alexander Cant appears as burgess of Montrose (RAA., II, 260,311). Dauyd Kantt, 'chamurlane in the Kyngis owmuth' (commission) is in record in Orkney, 1509 (REO., p. 82), and Robert Cant was tenant under the bishop of Moray, 1565 (REM., p. 438). Mr. Andrew Kant was minister at Pitsligo, 1634 (SCM., III, p. 120). Richard Kant, the grandfather of Immanuel Kant the philosopher, an inn-keeper in Russ and Werden at Heydekrug, was a native of Scotland (Heintze-Cascorbi, Die deuischen Familien Namen, 1925, p. 237).
