The family's name is derived from the Byzantine noble family Kantakouzenos, and they rose to prominence in the 17th century, producing several princes of Wallachia and Moldavia. Notable members include Șerban Cantacuzino, Prince of Wallachia from 1678 to 1688, and Ștefan Cantacuzino, who ruled from 1714 to 1715. The Cantacuzino family played a significant role in the political and cultural life of Romania, and their legacy continues to be recognized in Romanian history. Although they claim descent from Byzantine aristocracy, this is likely a fabrication by their earliest known ancestor, Michael Seytanoglu, whose name translates to 'Son of the Devil.'
