Canu or Canut is a French surname, which means 'cane naked'. The artisans making fabrics were highly skilled, but the cost of the equipment to make fabric was extremely expensive and therefore were not able to own them back in the 15 to 18th. centuries. While highly skilled they tend to not make a lot of money in the city, in which they work. When they went back to their village, the walk with their cane, which had a pouch attached to it. The pouch was where the belongings and cash was usually attached. They came back with not much or nothing (naked). The expression became the 'naked cane people' or canne nue, canu in French.
