Prof. Watson says "the personal name Catell or Catel was not uncommon among the Britons" (Watson I, p. 369). He thinks Caerketton Hill, a summit of the Pentlands, is probably a corruption of the older form.

CARKETTLE: From Carkettle in Midlothian. In Blaeu's Atlas Karkettill is placed on the right bank of the Esk near Rosun. Prof. Watson says "the personal name Catell or Catel was not uncommon among the Britons" (Watson I, p. 369). He thinks Caerketton Hill, a summit of the Pentlands, is probably a corruption of the older form. Peter de Karynketil witnessed the sale of a tenement in Gouyrton in 1317 (Neubotle, p. 306), William de Carketill was bailie of Edinburgh in 1403 (EBR., p. 2), Thomas of Carketylle of Scotland had a safe conduct into England in 1439 (Bain, IV, 1134), and Adam de Carketill, burgess of Edinburgh, witnessed an instrument of sasine in Glasgow in 1459 (REG., p. 412). Jonet Carkettle was married in 1490 (Sc. Ant., III, p. 103), The surname was common around Edinburgh in the fifteenth and sixteenth centimes. Alexander Carketle was burgess of Edinburgh in 1517 (ALHT., V, p. 104), John Carketill was bailie there in 1536 (Colston, Trades, p. 103), Johnne Carkettill of Finglen had a precept of remission in the same year (RSS., II, 2033), and in 1567 he along with John and George, his sons were warded in the Castle of Edinburgh (RPC., I, p. 575). John Carkettle was tenant of Newbottle Abbey in 1563 (Neubotle, p. 330), John Carketill in Haddington gave allegiance to the king in 1567 (RPC., I, p. 558), and George Carkettill rendered to Exchequer the accounts of the custumar of Haddingtonshire in 1590 (ER., XXII, p. 93). Adam Carkettill of Nunland in Haddington is in record in 1602 (Retours, Haddington, 17), and in the same year Margaret Carkettill was retoured heir of George Carkettill of Eister Munkrig, her father (Inquis., 97). Patrick Carkettill of Markill was heir of Patrick Carkettill of Markill in 1616 (Retours, Linlithgow, 93).
