From Carlisle in Cumberland. The first of the name who appears in Scotland is Odard de Carlyle, who witnessed a charter by Uchtred, son of Fergus, lord of Galloway, to the Hospital of St. Peter at York between 1158—64 (Bain, I, p. 422). He appears to have also held the land of Hoddam as he is described as Odard de Hodelme (cf Hoddam). Evdone de Karleolo or Eudo de Karliol, c. 1207, was witness to a charter by Eustace de Vescy of 20l. per annum out of the mill of Sprouiston to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, 208). Robert of Carlyle or of Hodelm, as he is chiefly styled, refers to himself in a plea dated 1199 as being 60 or more years of age (Bain, I, 280). His son, Adam of Carlyle is the first of the name whose connection with Scotland is clearly established (ibid., 2660 and elsewhere in the volume). To Adam de Carleolo the lands of Kynemund were granted by William de Brus who died in 1215 (Annandale, I, p. 2; Bain, I, 606). Sir William de Carlyle, knight, had charter of a piece of land in Newby, after 1271 (Annandale, I, p. 8). Gilberd de of Dumfriesshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a lion, rampant, and S' Gilb' de Kadiolo (Bain, II, p. 210,531). Beatrice de Karlele of Dumfriesshire also rendered homage, 1296 (ibid., p. 203). William of Carlile was one of the conservators of the truce between Scotland and England, 1451 (Bain, IV, 1239). Thomas Carlyle (1795—1881) is perhaps the greatest of the name known.
