Duncan de Carletone of Ayrshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 205). Johannes de Carletoun had a charter from Robert I of the lands of Dalmakeran in Ayrshire, 1323 (RMS., I, App. I, 63; Annandale, I, p. 132). Beatrix de Carletona was wife of William de Eychles, 1371 (RMS., I, 383). In the sixteenth century the Charltons were one of 'the four principal graynes or clans that ruled in North Tyne (Guppy, p. 309).
