From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Of territorial origin from the old barony of the same name in the parish of Carmyllie, Angus. The old name of the Carnegies of Southesk was de Balinhabd, which see. They acquired the lands of Carnegie about 1340 and assumed their surname from them (Angus, I, p. 86). Duthac de Carnegy witnessed a deed of sale in Aberdeen, 1383 (REA., II, p. 284), and John Carnegy de eodem witnessed a transumpt of 1450 (REB., I, 141). James Carnegie, fifth earl of Southesk, who was present in raising of the "Standard on the Braes of Mar," 1715, was the hero of the song "The Piper o' Dundee," and Jacobite relics says Carnegie of Phinhaven was "celebrated as the best flier from the field of Sheriffmuir." Andrew Carnegie (1837—1919), the Scottish-Arnerican multi-millionaire, is perhaps the best known of the name.
