CARNEIL: From the lands of Carneil near Dunfermline, Fife. Robert de la Kerneille witnessed a charter by William de Haya of the land of Petmulyn in 1171 (RPSA., p. 313). As R de Kerneil he witnessed the charter of the lands of Lesslyn (Leslie) to Malcolm filius Bartholf, c. 1171—99 (CAB., p. 547), and he is probably the Robert de Kernelle who witnessed the grants of Carnsy and Altermumn to the Abbey of Kelso c. 1200 (Keiso, 226). William de Kerneil was parson of Dunde a. 1214, and Roger de Kerneil was a charter witness about the same date (REB., II, 261; Panmure, II, p. 127; SCM., II, p. 305).
