Gilbert de C., about 1170, witnessed the charter of Hinkley Abbey, Leicester (Mon. i. 604). Ralph de C. was a benefactor of Studley Priory, Warwick (Mon. ii.). This family is armorially identified with that of Charnell. It was usually styled Charnel, or Charnels, in England.
