CARNEQUHEN: Local. There is a Carnwhin (wh = quh) near Girvan, Ayrshire, and a Carnqnhii II Kincardine Retours. In February 1497—98 James, earl of Buchane raised an action against Wilyeame Carnyquhin for "the wrangus occupacione and manuring of the landis of Saltcottis . in the schirefdome of Abirdene, pertenynp to the sade James and occupyit be the sade Wilyeame without tak of him be the space of xx yeris and for the wrangus uptaking and withhalding fra him of the malis and iroffittis of the sadis landis" (ALC., p. 117). A payment was made to William Carnoquhen, 1552 (EBR., p. 274). William Cairnoquhen and John Cairnoquhen were recorded as masters of families in parish of Buittle, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 568).
