(English) Dweller near a natural pile of rocks; one who came from Carn, the name of various small places in Cornwall.
The Carnes of Nash, co. Glamorgan, "descend in an unbroken line from Ynyr, king of Gwent, brother of Ithel, who was slain in 846. His great-grandson, Thomas o'r Carne, was brought up at Pen-carne, whence he was named Carne," Such is the statement, which may pass quant, val., in B.L.G.
(Carna?). From corn, carne, karn, a shelf in the sea, a heap of rocks. There is Carne in Verian; and Carn is the name of places in Morvah, Lanteglos by Fowey, and in Crowan.
(Welsh.) Local. A rock, a heap of stones. This family claim descent from Ithel, King of Ghent, now Monmouthshire. Thomas o'r Gare, youngest son of Ithel, King of Ghent, was brought up at one of his father's seats called Pencarne (from pen, the head, and carne, a rock, a heap of stones), whence he was named Game, which continues the surname of the family.
Carne is an old Cornish name. In the 17th century there was a gentle family of the name in St. Austell, and at the same time there was a yeoman family in St. Kew (M.). It is also an old Bodmin name (M.).; and it was represented in St. Buryan last century (P.). There was an old family of Carne at Camborne in the 16th century, said to be a branch of the Carnes of Glamorganshire; they came into possession of Tresilian, in Newlyn, by marriage (G.).
