From the occupation of carpenter or joiner. William the Carpenter (carpentarius) appears to have been a person of prominence in the latter half of the twelfth century, as he appears as witness to a charter by Malcolm IV to Radulf Frebern in 1153 (SCM., V, p. 242), and to another charter by the same king in favor of the Abbey of Scone c. 1160 (Scon, 10). He also witnessed, c. 1171—77, King William's confirmation of the foundation charter of Holyrood (LSC., p. 24). Douenaldus Carpentar witnessed charters by Maldouen, earl of Levenax c. 1250—70 (Levenax, p. 20, 98). Adam dictus Carpentaria held Haldhingleston (Auld Inglistoun) c. 1260, and about the same period Laurence Carpentarius is also mentioned (RMP., p. 55, 58, 59). This surname has not flourished in Scotland, its place being taken by the native 'wright,' distinctly a worker in wood.
