This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'at the carrick,' from residence on or by the carrick, or craig, or crag; Gaelic, carraig, a rock. A Scotch surname. It seems at times, however, to be a French form of the above—Breton, karrek, a rock in the sea (v. Crag in Skeat's Dictionary).

From the district of that name in Ayrshire. Duncan Karryc witnessed a charter by Maldowen, earl of Lennox, a. 1224 (RMP., p. 217). Sir Rolland de Kanyk was juror on inquest at Gerwan (Girvan) in 1260 on the marriage contracted between Hector de Carrie, knight, son of Sir Hector, and Samuel Mackan's daughter (Bain, I, 2674). Mestre Duncan de Carrike of county of Berewyke rendered homage, 1296 (ibid., II, p. 206). Mariota, wife of Nigel de Karrik, daughter of quondam Robert de Rosiue (Rosryth in Fife) sold a third part of the lands of Maisterton to the monks of Newbattle, 1320 (Neubotle, p. 41) Her son Robert is mentioned in same charter, and in the following one describes himself as Robertus Nigelli de Karrik (ibid., p. 43). John of Canyk, secretary of David II was appointed one of his envoys to the king of England, 1360 (Bain, IV, 59), and may be John de Carrik, canon of Glasgow, 1372 (Irvine, I, p. 12). Thomas of Carrie, bailie of Arne, 1429 (Ayr, p. 83). Thomas Carrig to be cautioner for Dame Margaret Howme, 1554 (CMN., 69), and in same year a tenement was granted in feu farm to Beatrix Carrik in Glasgow (Protocols, I).
