From the manor or barony of the same name in the parish of Carstairs (= 1170 Casteltarres, 'Castle of Tarres'). Thomas, son of Adam de Castrotharis was one of an inquest on the land of Pardevinan in Lanark, c. 1259 (APS., I, p. 88 after preface; Bain, I, 2175). Petrus de Castellstaris was witness in Abyrbrothok, 1351 (RAA., I, p. 335). Alexander de Castiltarris was vicar of the parish church of Muktone, 1450 (REB., I, 133). Alexander de Castiltaris witnessed an instrument of sasine of the superiority of Pollok, 1486 (Pollok, I, p. 192). Thomas Castaris was vicar of Quhalislaw, 1536 (ibid., I, p. 272). The name appears as Kerstairs and Kilstairs in the Brodie Diaries (Spalding Club ed.), p. 151,255. Catrina Kerstaris was wife of William Mane in Perth, 1551 (Rollok, 94). Carstaris 1583, Castilcaris 1443; Carstairis, Castares, Crastaris.
