I have not discovered the origin of this name: it may possibly be an abbreviation of Carruthers which is a north of England surname taken from the place in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. In Ireland Caruth has been in Ulster since the seventeenth century and it appears in the Rolls for Antrim, Armagh and Donegal (1664—9) while Carruthers will be found in the Inquisition for Co. Armagh some thirty years earlier.
