From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
An old family of this name which possessed the lands of Carwood, near Biggar, Lanarkshire, became extinct in the male line c. 1550 (Bigger, p. 70). William Carwod of that Ilk was respited in 1526 for "tresonable intercomonyng" with certain "Inplismen and traitouris dueland upoun Levin' (RSS., I, 3474). Margaret Carwood, perhaps the last of her name, was bed-chamber woman to Mary Queen of Scots, and assisted the Oueen's escape from Holyrood in 1566. Between 1557 and 1585 there is record of an "assedation to Margrat Carwod pantrice to the Queen of Ye Kirks of Muling and Strathordill" (RD., p. 486). She was afterwards married to John Stewart of Tullymet (Cowan, Mary Queen of Scots, I, p. 118,161). A John Carwood, probably of Scottish descent, was assistant Justice in South Carolina, in 1725. An old spelling was Carvewood.
