Of local origin from some place of the name, perhaps Cassilis (in 1363 Castlis) in the parish of Kirkmichael, Ayrshire. The place name is in plural form, and Skeat has shown that "when three consonants come together the middle one goes; no one pronounces the t in castle." Families of this name are said to have been settled in Bo'ness for several generations, but no proof offered. William Cassillis was admitted burgess of Glasgow, 1624 (Burgesses). Thomas Cassellls was in Stanevbyrewood, parish of Lesmahago, 1657, and eight more of the name in the neighborhood are noted (Lanark CR.). John Cassillis, writer in Edinburgh, was appointed Islay Herald, 1667, James Cassells of Geattysyde of Pollmood is in record in same year (Stirling), and Isobell Cassles in Lesmahago parish, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 337),
