A family of Carsewells, who derived their name from Carsewell in the parish of Neilston, are said to have been settled in Renfrewshire for centuries, but they seldom appear in the public records. (2) There is also a Carswell (in 15. cent., Creswell or Carswell) in the barony of Carnwath, Lanarkshire, and (3) there was a tenement of the same name in the barony of Hassendean, Roxburghshire. Alexander de Cressewell witnessed a charter by Roland of Galloway, son of Vchtred, c. 1200 (Kelso, 254). Willelmus de Cressewell was chancellor of Moray, c. 1281—98 (Grant, III p. 7), and Robert de Cressewelle was one of the Scots prisoners of war taken at Dunbar Castle in 1296 (Bain, II, 742). Symon de Cresseville of the county of Roxburgh, and David de Cressewelle of Lanarkshire rendered homage in 1296. The seal of the former bears an eight-rayed figure and S' Symonis d' Cresvile (Bain, II, p. 199,212, 550). William de Creswille witnessed a charter by Thomas de Stradeqwhyn in the Mearns in 1351 (RAA., II, 25), and another William Kersseuyle or Cresseuyle had confirmation of a charter of lands in the barony of Roberton in the sheriffdom of Lanark, 1373 (RMS., I, 517). Johannes de Kerswell witnessed a notarial instrument in 1413 (Pollok, I, p. 146). In 1561 "ane chenyie of gold" was redeemed in Stirling "for Master Johne Carswele, persone of Kilmertyne" (SBR., p. 79), afterwards the first protestant bishop of the Isles, and translator of the Book of Common Order into Gaelic in 1567. Malcolm Carsuell, constable of Craginche, appears in record in 1572 (OPS., II, p. 100). Catherine Carswell's Life of Robert Burns (1931) caused much fluttering in the dovecotes of the poet's admirers. Carsell 1692, Kersewell 1549.
