The original surname refers to a few places named so in southern Germany (for example, Kesselberg, north of Baden-Württemberg - near France and Hesse. Also one in Bavaria). They are named from the word kessel, which is cognate with the English word for a kettle (though modern day, it is more precisely a 'boiler'), and then the word berg, which means 'mountain'.
