CASTLELAW: Of local origin from one or more of the many places of the name in the southern counties. William Castellaw was witness at Failfuid, 1504 (Simon, 125), and forethought felony was done to Alexander Castellaw, 1532 (Trials, I, p. 160). Alexander Castallaw was bailie of the burgh of Dysart in 1543 (Dysart, p. 12). The surname appears in Stirling in 1563 (Soltre, p. 126), and James Castellaw was bailie there in 1602 (SBR., p. 103,283). The name is also found in Edinburgh in 1567 (MCM., II, p. 308). W. Castellaw was minister at Stewarton in 1637, and another William Castellaw was recorded heir of William Castlelaw, apothecary burgess of Edinburgh, in 1656 (Inquis., 4167). John Castellaw appears in Templhouse in 1667 (Corsehill, p. 75), Alison Castillaw in Fouldine in 1672 (Lauder), and Margaret Castlelaw was retoured heir in lands, etc., in the barony of Coldingham in 1692 (Inquis. Sp.). Thomas Castellaw, clerk to the Presbytery of Glasgow in 1688 may be the same who was minister of Leswalt, Wigtownshire, in 1715 (Wigtown).
