Perhaps from ME. cater, catour, a buyer of provisions, a caterer. Alexander Catour or Caytour held a tenement in Arnbroath, 1464, 1466, and Thomas Caytour witnessed letters of sasine, 1467 (RAA., II, 151,167). Alexander Catour was carter at Dunkeld in 1515 (Rent. Dunk., p. 150).
Formerly acater, a caterer or purveyor. Halliw. Le Catour, Le Catur. H.R. The place allotted to the keeping of provisions purchased for the court was called the aeatry, and the purchaser himself bore the name of the Achatour. Le Achatur is another form in the H.R.
