CATHAL: Gaelic and Middle Gaelic Cathal (in M'Vurich), Irish Cathal (common from seventh century onwards), O. W. Catgual, from Katu-valo-s 'war wielder.' Kathil mac Murchy sealed an inquest made at Dumbarton, 1239 (APS., I, p. 99; Bain, I, 2174). The name was early borrowed by the Norsemen and occurs in Landndmabok (II, 18) as Kadal. Cathal or Kathel is a common personal name in Assynt at the present day. From this comes Maccall.
