From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
CATHKIN: From the old lands of Catcune now represented by the ruined castle in the parish of Borthwick, Midlothian. Thomas de Catkone of the county of Edeneburk rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a hawk killing a bird, S' Thome de Cathkwin (Bain, II, p. 201,546). Thomas Cathkin, dempster, is mentioned in 1481 (Cambus., 211), and Andro Cathkin had precept of a letter of gift from the king in 1500 (RSS., I, 544). William Cathtkin was a burgess of Edinburgh in 1514 (Soltre, p. 171), and Edward Cathkin was a "buikseller and burgess" of the same city in 1601 (BM., II, p. 229). In 1550 we have record of the revision of four acres of land at Lochbank, near Edinburgh, by Margaret Cathkene or Caethkin, wife of David Kinloch, one of the deacons of trades in Edinburgh (Seals. Supp,, 195).
