The Welsh Annals (Annales Cambriae, Mon. Hist. Brit.) mention a Catell, king of Powys, in A.D. 808, and other eminent personages of the same Christian name. Cattal is, however, the name of a township in the W. R. of Yorkshire. The forms in the H.R. are De Catallo and Catel. A French Protestant refugee family of Catel settled in England temp. Elizabeth.
This may be a diminutive of the surname Cat, for Catherine; or from the Irish name Cahill or Cathail; from cathal, valour.
