This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'O'Coffey,' an Irish patronymic. Coffee, of course, is imitative. Biddy in the instance below speaks for her own nationality. It is said that the original form of O'Coffey was O'Cobhthaidh. Dr. Charnock says that Murragh O'Cobhthaidh was bishop of Deny and Raphoe, temp. 1173 (v. Ludus Patronymicus). Both of the modern forms are naturally found at Liverpool, which numbers so many Irish among its population.
