Two parishes in Yorkshire, called North and South Cave, were the residence of the ancestors of the Caves now of Stretton, co. Derby, soon after the Conquest. Shirley.

Wyomar had a grant of Cave, Yorkshire, c. 1090, from Alan, Earl of Richmond; c. 1140 Margaret de C. and Richard de C. held from the Church of York (Mon. ii.). 1307-26 Sire Alexander de C., a commissioner of array and justiciary. The occurrence of the name in Normandy shows the origin of the family, though its name was derived from England.
