Cayas Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

(The translation is below, because in Spanish there are specific words that do not have a direct translation in English)

It is very likely that the origin of this surname is related to the word 'cayado' which is a 'thick cane, usually made of wood, and with a curved upper end that is mainly used to drive cattle.'

This in turn derives from the vulgar Latin caiatus, abbreviation of 'báculus caiatus' (cane as a club). Caiatus originated from the Late Latin 'caia' (club). This is a word too close to cayas, considering that in Latin the 'y' was not included as a letter but only the 'i'.

First data. In ancient armies, the cudgel was a long pole topped with a large silver hilt on top. This was nailed in the center of the camp and was the place where they sent to punish the soldiers who misbehaved. Hence the expression 'Vete a la porra' used in Spain.

Second. The Cayas family coat of arms includes two silver castles coincidentally. I also found the following description of the shield: 'These are their arms: In gold, four sticks of gules; match of azur, with two castles of silver, cleared of gules and placed in wood. The study of the family heraldic shield 'tells' us about those who formed the origin of the Cayas family, since that was their function, to show others their differential elements, since the inclusion of the stick element is the characteristic of the nobles of origin military, (Palos) wants to look like the sticks of the castrum (camp)'. Here also casually mentioned 'sticks' and castrum, which is a 'camp'.

This is how the coincidences point to this being the origin of the surname Cayas.
