Derives from "cepo" - foot of a tree trunk. Hence a place where bushes abound.

Comes from the word "cepo" meaning the base of the trunk of a tree. Its references are multiple: an instrument for tying cat­tle, a wooden trap, a grave marker, and a stake hidden in the earth and meant to hinder the march of the enemy.

Castilian name from the villa of Cepeda (Salamanca). Claims descent from Vasco Vasquez de Cepeda who accompanied Alfonso XI in siege of Gibraltar. Santa Teresa de Jesus belonged to this line.
