From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
CERES: From the lands or barony of Ceres in Fife, anciently Syras or Syres. The family appears to have been descended from a son of Gillemichael, 3. earl of Fife. d. p. 1133. Adam de Syreis appears frequently as a witness in charters by William the Lion, Earl Duncan, and Robert and Richard, bishops of St. Andrews (Sc. Peer., IV, p. 5). He witnessed King William's charter of the church of Aberratheven to the Abbey of Inchaffray, c. 1199—1200 (Inchaffray, p. 4), and the same king's charter of Rosin clerac (Rossieclerach) to James de Pert (SCM., II, p. 318). As de Sirais he witnessed a gift by Duncan, earl of Fife, to the nuns of North Berwick, a. 1177 (CMN., 6),. between 1189—99 he witnessed grants in favor of Arbroath Abbey (RAA., I, 19, 28), and before 1200, as de Sireis he attested another charter by King William the Lion (LSC., 42). His son and successor, Duncan de Syreis, flourished early in the thirteenth century, and left daughters only, one of whom, Margaret, was married to Michael Scot (RD., 174,175), ancestor of the family of Scot of Balwearie. Simon of Sireis was falconer of the king of Scotland, 1212 (Bain, I, 532), Alexander de Sireis witnessed a grant by Thomas de Lundin to the nuns of North Berwick, c. 1220 (CMN., 11), and Galfridus Surays witnessed a confirmation by William, earl of Ross, 1263 (REM., p. 279). The goods of John of Syres, merchant of Aberdeen, were plundered in England, 1370 (Bain, IV, 158), William Soreys was on an assize in 1389 regarding the mill-lands of Quarelwode in Moray (REM., p. 171). Robert de Seres was admitted burgess of Dundee, 1408 (Wedd., p. 20n), John Ceras and Robert Ceras were witnesses in Inverness in 1456 (Invernessiana, p. 133), George Seres was cantor in Brechin Cathedral, 1457 (REB., II, 274), and Thomas Seres was bailie of Dundee 1492 (Sc. Ant., VI p. 23). Patrick Ceras held land in Arbroath, 1505 (RAA., II, 448). Scheres 1447, Serass 1437, Sereys 1260, Suryass (Fam. of Innes, p. 10), Syrais c. 1250; Serras, Seyrus, and Soreys (all three in REM.).
