La grande diffusione del toponimo 'Cerreto'nell'Italia centrale potrebbe associare il cognome Cerretani ad un numero indefinito di origini diverse. Certamente, come riporta anche il Repetti, sono originari da Cerreto Maggio i Cerretani 'fiorentini', estinti nel 1802, dei quali si mantiene il ricordo a Firenze con la via ed il palazzo de' Cerretani
Anche nel territorio della Repubblica di Siena, durante il XII secolo, si registra il sorgere di una famiglia Cerretani. In questo caso Il cognome Cerretani deriva da 'dominorum de Cerreto', riferito al castello di Cerreto Ciampoli (da Ciampolo signore e console di Siena) nella zona di San Giovanni a Cerreto. Nei secoli successivi i Cerretani, oltre al castello di Cerreto ed alcuni palazzi a Siena fra i quali quello affacciato su piazza del Campo, acquisirono la proprietà di Saltennano in val d'Arbia, del Castello di Stertignano in Maremma, di Cerreto Selva posto sul confine di Siena con Volterra-Pisa e di numerosi poderi, con case coloniche, diffusi nel contado senese.
Castel Cerreto dette certamente il nome alla casata abruzzese dei Cerretani, famiglia detentrice di feudi nel Teramano sin dall'anno 1144, della quale Giacomo, nato nella seconda metà del secolo XIV, è il personaggio più conosciuto. Da tale casata è possibile che sia discesa la famiglia Cerretani che troviamo documentata dal XIX secolo in Abruzzo, prevalentemente a Fara Filiorum Petri, in provincia di Chieti, dove nel 1821 attivarono un mulino e successivamente una fabbrica di gassosa. Ad oggi restano alcune famiglie in provincia di Pescara mentre è rilevante il numero di Cerretani in provincia di Fermo, nelle Marche, forse legati anche al più vicino Cerreto d'Esi.
