In the form of Chambney this surname went out to Virginia in 1635 (v. Hotten's Lists of Emigrants). It is found in Boston as Chamley, and at Philadelphia as Chambley. The change from 'n' to 'l' or vice versa is common; compare balusters and banisters, the latter being modern.
