From De Champigne or Champagne, Normandy. In 1165 Geoffry de Champigné held one fee in the bailifry of Pont-Audemer. Nigel, Richard, Osbert, Ralph, Josceline de Campania of Normandy, 1180-95 (MES); Robert de Campain of England, 1199 (ECE). In the 13th century the name became Champney and Caumpeny.
