Chancellor Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from an official title. 'the chancellor,' a custodian of writings or records. The chancery (i.e. chancellery) also gave a local (practically official) surname, but it is put in an abbreviated Latin form in early records, as for example:

Richard de Cancett, Hertfordshire., 1273. Hundred Rolls.

Emeric de Cancett, Southamptonshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

These stand for 'de Cancellaria,' i.e. the record-room. The forms of Chancellor are somewhat varied. I furnish instances from a single register:

Robert le Chaunceler, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

Alan Chanceler, Norfolk, ibid.

Walter Chaunceler, Norfolk, ibid.

Robert le Caunceler, Bedfordshire, ibid.

Roger le Canceler, Bedfordshire, ibid.

William Cancellarius, Oxfordshire, ibid.

With Chancellor and Cancellor, compare Chandler and Candler. Since writing the above I have come across a local form in full:

Willelmus del Chaincery, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.

1749. Married — Thomas Brooke and Elizabeth Chancellor: St. George's Chapel, Mayfair.
